1st Annual Scotch and Short Stories- November 2010

It is hard to believe that almost a year has passed since our first Scotch and Short Stories meeting in November 2009. By next month, we will have read 11 stories, tried at least 11 different bottles of Scotch, gained 3 new members, and eaten about 100 pounds of snacks. The 1st Annual meeting will be awesome.

Mere & Josh will host, but Mike is back-up hosting. Josh is picking the story, and Steve P. is bringing the Scotch. The date is set for Thursday, November 18th. 7:30 is our new time.

There will be a game. Get ready.

On the White Horse

Geoff picked a story called White Horse by Thom Jones. Everyone liked it.... the interpretations were varied. Is White Horse heroin? Or definitely heroin... Of all the needy living beings in Bombay, why did Ad Magic fixate on the horse? General consensus was that we could all use some of  Powell's Headache Tablets and a roll of hundred dollar bills. Joy got a recommendation for the Scotch from Barmy Wine & Liquor, a blended 15 year called the Dimple Pinch. It is the forth largest blended deluxe Scotch whiskey in the world (since 1893). Pretty delicious... a bit sweeter than some of the others we have tried. Everyone liked it.

August and September Meetings came and went

In August, Lindsay picked the story "But" by Anne Donovan. It was a good read that got everyone talking. In August Mere ran into a recent DC arrival, Geoff. He made his first appearance tonight at the September meeting. Tonight Mere picked the story "A Good Man is Hard to Find" by Flannery O'Connor. Steve got the scotch and it was delicious. A good evening all around with the crew plus our new member Geoff.

Summer Hiatus and Happy Hour

Announcing a July Hiatus from S & SS... everyone is so hot... so travel-y...

Happy Hour sometime in July!

August meeting:
date: TBD
Host: Josh & Mere
Story: Lindsay
Scotch: Joy

June Meeting- the 23rd

We were riding light this month... busy summer days of travel and the like... but a healthy group made it out to Lindsay's place for our first meeting outside of D.C.

Steve C. selected The Monkey's Paw by W.W. Jacobs in a loving tribute to the Simpsons
http://www.americanliterature.com/Jacobs/SS/TheMonkeysPaw.html

Monkey's Paw just keeps popping up over the last few days... just last night on Colbert he mentioned the Monkey's Paw in relation to the oil spill.

Colbert Clip of the Monkey's Paw

Good news on a new possible member- Ohio's loss is D.C.'s gain with Lauren. We'll see if she actually gets a glass.

The Scotch this week was Xi's pick-- delicious.

May meeting memories

The May meeting went great. Alex chose "The Lottery" by Shirley Jackson:

Some of us had read the story in school- it was new for others. Glad my name isn't Tessie Hutchinson.

Next meeting to be held in VA!

The March meeting was great- thanks to Mike for picking out a really interesting story and giving us a lot of background and really good discussion questions to build on. The scotch was delightful as usual (thanks Lindsay).

The April Meeting is tomorrow night. We will be reading a selection from "The Brief and Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao" by Junot Díaz and meeting at Alex's place. Mike is bringing the Scotch. See you soon!

We're Rich!!

Some good news for Scotch and Short Stories out of the NY Times:
"According to one study, joining a group that meets even just once a month produces the same happiness gain as doubling your income."

March Meeting tomorrow!!

February's meeting was great. The stories and conversations are getting more in-depth and more interesting each week. Thanks to Joy for the great Toni Morrison story Recitatif.  Still amazed at the different perceptions we all had when it came to Roberta and Twyla. At February's meeting we drank Clan MacGregor. It was good. Steve wanted to bring it as a comparison to some of the other scotches we have tried up to this point.

Tomorrow we'll be meeting to discuss "The Life and Adventures of Shed Number XII" by Victor Pelevin. This was Mike's pick. Lindsay is bringing the Scotch.

It's going to be "Partner" initiation night. Bring your wristbands.

Twenty Oh-Ten with a Scotch in my Hand

January's meeting was hosted by Steve P. and Grace. We read The Veldt by Ray Bradbury, and the story was a hit. Is updating our website within a few hours of the meeting just the Veldt proving its point?

Meredith brought the Macallan 10-year single malt-- pretty tasty.

Our meeting welcomed one new official member, Lindsay, and one trial member, Mikey. We'll vote shortly for the title of our new people--- options on the table: Associate, Junior Associate, Intern, Apprentice... We'll see.

Looking forward to Feb.'s meeting! Mere & Josh are hosting, Joy is selecting the story, and Steve C. is bringing the Scotch. See you soon.
